Here is a roundup from the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards, which served up some unexpected misfires, a touch of déjà vu, and a whole lot of black. While some stars nailed the assignment, others left us scratching our heads.

A Patchwork Puzzle Gone Wrong
Joey King is usually a sartorial force on the red carpet, but this Miu Miu dress? A catastrophe. It looks like a last-minute art project cobbled together from fabric scraps found on the atelier floor. The silhouette is awkward, the execution is messy, and the overall aesthetic is just disappointing. Joey has the style credentials to pull off riskier looks, but this one is a rare—and unfortunate—misstep.

Elegant, but…
Yes, Kate Hudson looks stunning in her black Thom Browne gown. No one is denying that. But where’s the excitement? The intrigue? The wow factor? Kate thrives in bold, vibrant hues, and seeing in actress in dark colours will never appeal to me.

A Great Dress in Desperate Need of Glam
Kathryn Hahn stepped out in a striking black strapless Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2025 gown with fabulous fringe detailing. The dress itself is a winner, but the lack of glam is throwing the whole thing off. This was a real shame because the dress deserved better.

A Sophisticated Return to Form
Nominated for her song Kiss the Sky from Wild Robot, Maren Morris looked effortlessly chic in a black strapless Monique Lhuillier gown with an ivory train cascading behind her. This was a sophisticated and well-thought-out choice—far removed from the over-the-top Kardashian-esque looks she once gravitated towards. It’s elegant, flattering, and nominee-worthy.

A Floral Delight
With so much black on the carpet, Marianne Jean-Baptiste was a breath of fresh air in a white Oscar de la Renta cape gown adorned with pink and green sequin floral appliques. The design was whimsical yet refined. Her stylist Jason Rembert had an incredible night dressing Aldis Hodge, Moeka Hoshi, Ethan Herisse and Adrian Brody.

Wickedly Stylish in Silver
Wicked star Marissa Bode delivered a shimmering moment in a silver Maria Lucia Hohan gown, complete with the brand’s signature pleating along with daring cut-out. It was sleek, elegant, and undeniably glamorous—a perfect choice for the rising star.

No
Miu Miu had a rough night, and Rachel Brosnahan was another casualty. While she remains a favourite on the red carpet, this design felt too dated for her.

Spot the Difference
Feeling a sense of déjà vu? That’s because Sarah Michelle Gellar’s black Oscar de la Renta strapless rose motif gown was the same gown Priyanka Chopra wore to the Red Sea International Film Festival Closing Ceremony, silver version, in December. Sarah styled hers with a Roger Vivier clutch.
